Lunar Gateway or Gateway is a proposed space station planned by NASA, which will be placed in lunar orbit to support crewed missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. It is a vital component of NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon by the end of the decade.
The Lunar Gateway will serve as:
A staging point and outpost for astronauts making trips to the Moon.
An experimental laboratory where scientists can conduct research in areas such as life support systems, radiation effects and deep space exploration.
A gateway for future missions to Mars and other destinations in the solar system.
The Gateway will be a collaboration between NASA, international space agencies, and commercial companies. It will provide a platform for international partners to contribute their expertise and resources to space exploration.
NASA plans to launch the first module of the Lunar Gateway, the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE), in 2022. Additional modules and crewed missions will follow in the coming years.
